Free tool: Plan Prep

Get a big drawing set into your chat

Full drawing sets often won’t go through a chat upload. They can be over the upload limit (25 MB per file on Basic, 99 MB on Plus), or packed with so many images and text layers that they fail to process, and the chat reads text, not linework. Plan Prep turns a drawing PDF of any size into a compact PLAN DIGEST text file, with a sheet index and the key notes from every sheet.

Private by design. Plan Prep runs entirely in your browser. Your drawings are read on your own device and are never uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere.

Digest style

Big sets work best on a computer. On a phone, very large files can run out of memory.

How to use with Chief Construction Agent

Three steps from drawing set to answers.

  1. 01

    Prep your plans here

Drop in the drawing set. Plan Prep reads every sheet on your device and builds a PLAN DIGEST .txt with a sheet index at the top.

  2. 02

Upload the digest in your chat

Upload the PLAN DIGEST .txt in your Chief Construction Agent chat, plus any small letters, memos, or a single sheet you want it to look at. Basic: files up to 25 MB through your upload link. Plus: up to 99 MB per file.

  3. 03

    Ask your question

Ask for a schedule, a scope check, a list of the sheets that cover the roof, or what to confirm with your architect.

Photo and plan-sheet uploads are on Plus. Compare plans

What’s in the digest

The text from every sheet, without the bulk.

  1. Header

File names, page count, and date

So the chat knows what set it’s reading and how many sheets it has.

  2. Sheet index

    Sheet number, title, and discipline

Read from each title block, such as A1.01, M-201, FP-1, S2.1, or G-001. The discipline comes from the prefix: General, Civil, Landscape, Structural, Architectural, Interiors, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection, Fire Alarm, Telecom, and more.

  3. Project facts

The basics, when they can be found

Project name and address from the title block, codes cited, occupancy, sprinklers, scope statements, phases, and bid alternates.

  4. Notes

    Key notes, sheet by sheet

Scope, demolition, new work, keyed notes, and schedule rows. Title blocks, firm boilerplate, legends, and notes repeated on other sheets are left out, so a huge set becomes a short file the chat can read in full. Choose Full text if you want every line.

  5. Flags

    Scanned sheets are called out

Pages with little or no text are marked “likely scanned/image-only, text not readable” and counted, so nothing is silently missed.

FAQ

Plan Prep questions.

Are my drawings uploaded anywhere?

No. Plan Prep runs entirely in your web browser. Your PDF is read on your own device, and the PLAN DIGEST is created there too. The files are never sent to a server.

Why not just upload the drawing PDF to the chat?

Uploads are capped at 25 MB per file on Basic and 99 MB on Plus, and drawing PDFs often fail even below that, because they are packed with images and text layers. The chat also reads a PDF’s text, not the drawings, and pulls only part of a long file into each answer. A compact PLAN DIGEST puts the full sheet index first and keeps each sheet’s notes short, so the chat can see the whole set.

What happens with scanned sheets?

Scanned or image-only sheets have no readable text, so Plan Prep flags them and counts them in the digest. You can turn on the optional OCR setting to try to read them, but OCR is slow and often misreads drawings, so those sheets are marked low confidence. It reads up to 60 scanned pages per run.

Does the digest replace the drawings?

No. It contains text only. Linework, hatching, images, and dimensions that are drawn graphically are not included, and sheet numbers and titles are best guesses from each title block. Confirm anything important against the sheets and with your architect or engineer.
